I had it in my head that my college friend once made a video of himself folding a fitted sheet (a skill he learned working in his father’s laundromat) and submitted it to MTV in the 1990s as a veejay audition. It turns out this never happened, but this week we decided that it was still a pretty good idea. This is a useful video, because not only does it show how to fold a fitted sheet, it shows what a disaster your house becomes when your college friend comes over to shoot a mid-90s music video about how to fold a fitted sheet and your baby decides this process is way more interesting than a nap. Also, it shows how good it is to have a friend with laundry experience who’s also found a few days’ lull in his career as a television producer/editor:
If you missed it, folding a fitted sheet is really very simple:
(1) Turn the whole sheet inside out and hold it the long way.
(2) Feel inside for the two corners and get your hands snug up inside.
(3) Clap your hands together and flip the corner in your right hand over your left hand.
(4) Straighten the sheet’s edges.
(5) Repeat steps (1) through (3) with the other end.
(6) Straighten and fold. You’re done!

And to think that all this time I’ve just been sort of bundling my fitted sheets up in a weird log shape and stuffing them in the linen closet. I didn’t even know it was POSSIBLE to fold them! Having said that, I am kind of a whizz at getting a duvet cover onto a duvet, though: that’s what happens when you’re sent away to an all-girls boarding school at age 11 and have to learn to change your own sheets every week, I guess.
I’ve never heard of this site, but I’m so glad I clicked over from your blog. I will do it this way from now on, like the OCD robot that I am. And my brain will be at ease in a way it has never been while folding these mothers.
My favorite part is the kid(s?) under the sheet at about 1:10. cracks me up everytime.
WOW! I wrote this “Folding diapers is great, but if someone can teach me how to fold a fitted sheet I will be eternally grateful!!” on a previous post on CleanFreak Confessions and a few days later my prayers are answered! Thanks for listening!!!!!
This is sick tutorial!!!!! Wow who knew there was an actual way to do this.
This site is great- love coming back for more!
This video ROCKS!! While the rest of my bachelor pad will still remain a disaster, at least the sheets will be folded.
This is video is important to human history. I think we should submit this to the Library of Congress so generations after us can look back and understand this mystery.
Thanks for putting this up! And your kids are adorible!!!

AMAZING!!
::heads off to organize linen closet::
i had to leave a comment since this is so awesome!
first, i am the only one in my house that knows how to fold a fitted sheet- i needed this tutorial for my husband, who will learn from it based on the cuteness of small kids factor and bitchin soundtrack, vs. my own pedagogy which includes a lot of sarcasm and eye rolling over his 1/2assed attempts which result in a big ball of sheet being shoved to the bottom of the laundry basket.
second- was i the only one who had to watch this twice to understand that it is a crib sheet being folded? i was like, how did jim get the final result to be so tiny? i don’t get it!
third- good lord your kids are gorgeous. and this coupled with your previous post w/r/t the joys of photoshop in cleaning up pix of your home really let me believe that you do, indeed, have small kids and a dog living in your house, which when usually seen in pictures, is unrealistically spotless!
awesome post. just awesome.
My mother taught me how to fold fitted sheets when I was in elementary school. It never seemed hard. I though people were joking about not knowing how when I went away to college. Cute video! Cute kids!
Got here from your blog… LOVE the video!!!! Love the kids in the video! Hilarious and useful all at the same time!
That was actually really helpful! And fun to watch. Makes me want to force my video producer friend into creating similar videos as he is also underemployed. Sans the cute kids unfortunately.
No no no…all wrong! At step six you roll the sheet. Then you can stack them and it clearly distinguishes them from the flat sheets. Haha. Way to bring out the OCD in me.
Jim - freaking awesome. I don’t think I ever enjoyed reading about laundry quite so much.
God Bless You. I have been waiting at least 20 years for someone to show me how to do that. I didn’t even know it was possible until I went away to university and a nice woman that washed my new sheets for me while I moved into my apartment gave them back to me folded like this. I was seriously in awe but didn’t have the courage to ask her to show me how she had accomplished such a miracle. I can’t wait to try it myself!
this is hilarious. I’ve been doing a half-assed version of this my entire life. The “repeat” part somehow escaped me. Thanks for the tip and for the laugh. The amoeba-like sheet monster kids in the background cracked me up. - Cathy
Cool! The next time I do the laundry, I’ll actually try to fold the fitted sheet correctly instead of just wadding it up and throwing it in the closet.
Oh, by the way, :25-:30 gave me a “mother” flashback. My mom would show us how to do something and then, when done, UNDO it so that we could try. Why, lady?! It was done! WHY!?!?!?!?
[...] a condemnation of all men. In fact, Jim recently made me swoon more than a little, what with his admirable fitted sheet folding skills and excellent taste in early 90s alternative [...]
