Every year around Mother’s Day, Jon’s mom hosts a female-only get together for Mother’s Day. A couple of years ago, I was getting ready to go and Leta opened and spilled a bottle of vibrant pink nail polish on the carpet outside the bathroom. We were already running very late, so I dashed out of the house to enjoy a nice brunch with Grandma and left Jon alone to deal with the mess.
He used:
Enzyme-based pet stain cleaner
Nail polish remover
A household cleaner with seventeen multi-syllable ingredients like:
ETHYLENEGLYCOL MONOBUTYL ETHER
Swear words
Vinegar based household cleaner
Vacuum
A few more swear words…
I felt guilty leaving him to do the work on this spill, but he’s got an acceptable level of OCD that will kick in mostly at the right time. I resisted the urge to check in on him about seven minutes into my drive to Grandma’s house. I finally gave in and called him after he had been working for over an hour to solve the problem, and that’s when I learned that his repertoire of swear words had recently expanded to include ones in several foreign languages.
Jon eventually called forty-five minutes later to give the good news that he had cracked the code concerning this particular stain and apologized for calling his daughter that awful name in Spanish. Turns out that the solution was a delicate combination of everything he had tried.
I’m actually glad Jon was in charge of this particular mess because I probably would have stopped at the nail polish remover and then moved straight to a pair of scissors.
Lesson learned: Keep nail polish away from three-year-old hands AT ALL TIMES.

Wait, is it Jon’s OCD or your OPI?? I’m so confused now.
Grain alcohol! It will clean that nail polish up in a flash. I discovered an old nail polish spill under a pile of stuffed animals in our daughter’s bedroom. When I asked about it, she confessed to having spilled it after ‘painting’ her baby doll’s lips. She was afraid I’d be mad (!!?!Who ME?!?!) so she hid the mess. On the new carpet. My husband called at that moment so I told him HIS daughter’s deed. He had the brilliant idea to try the grain alcohol which we happened to have on hand (we were making Kahlua–now you know our secret ingredient! Of course you may ask yourself WHY you would drink something that also has the power to remove nail polish–days-old- dried-on-the-carpet nail polish but that is for another discussion.)Just soak the area, blot with an old towel, voila! Go back and rinse then blot again.
